Why I Love My Big.

There are quite a few traditions at Salem (to be expected, since it was founded in 1772!), but I think my favorite one is Big/Little. Towards the beginning of the semester, there was a huge "reveal" party to officially announce who "has" who, but my relationship with my big, Porsha, started far before that moment.

In fact, I helped her move in.

Not long after I confirmed to Salem, she followed me on Tumblr. I didn't know this until later, though. All I knew was that someone from Salem had followed me. Didn't think much of it (sorry, Big!). As I remember it, we really "met" on Facebook in a discussion about music.

My relationship with my big is one of the most special connections I've made at Salem so far. While I have quite a few absolutely amazing friends, she is one person who has consistently been there. Always. There are a million and two reasons (and counting!) why I love her... here are the few that I consider to be the most important:
  • There's no such thing as "too much time." Trust me when I say that she has the most hilarious sense humor. I could listen to her talk all day and I'm pretty sure I'd still be laughing. But that's not all...  I got lucky in the sense that both our sarcasm and sensitivity levels match up quite evenly. Even when I end up on the bathroom floor, she's there.
  • We match musically. Now, even though it's not the only thing I consider when choosing friends, similar musical tastes are always a benefit.... we are pretty much one and the same in this sense. I've never met someone so obsessed with Taylor Swift. Recently, I surprised her with the newest of Taylor's magazine releases and she screamed.
  • She gets excited. This is where we differ. I've never been one to be externally excited about anything. I appreciate the fact that she can and does get excited over even the small things. It's a reality check for me, a reminder to be happy and grateful for the good things.
  • It's a no-judgement zone. One of the best - if not the best - parts of my relationship with my big is that there's no judgement about anything in either direction. I know that I could tell her anything and trust that she wouldn't think less of me for it. I've said some pretty ridiculous things over the last semester, and the usual response is "you're (insert adjective), I love you."
I'm lucky to have the kind of big/little relationship that is guaranteed to last a long time, even when Salem days are over. She's pretty great. That's an understatement.

Keep not settling,
